Jean Ogilvie

Jean grew up in a vibrant learning environment that inspired her teaching journey. She began her career as a Math tutor for elementary students at Kumon Learning Center during high school, which ignited her passion for education. While studying at Illinois Wesleyan University, she supported her peers in the Hispanic Studies department, deepening her commitment to mentorship.
Jean's teaching experience expanded in Madrid, where she conducted home visits to teach English to middle and grade school students. Most recently, she has focused on one-on-one tutoring in conversational Spanish with adults and has started conducting in-person workshops that combine her love for hand embroidery, including classes on felt bookmark-making and photo embroidery.
She holds a BA in Hispanic Studies and an MA in Spanish Language and Translation from New York University in Madrid, supplemented by graduate studies at Middlebury College’s Summer Language School.
Before fully immersing herself in education, Jean worked as an agency Creative Director for five years, facilitating corporate workshops and trainings. After leaving the corporate world in 2021, she pursued her artistic interests through hand embroidery workshops, learning from renowned figures like The Wondermakers Collective and Danielle Clough.

I deeply value my own education and know how important it is for young people to feel confidently about school and succeed in academics. Having felt the pressures and rigor of academic life firsthand, I bring to the table a deep sense of empathy and patience for kids, families, and adults navigating the learning process.
Getting to know each student as a person and a learner within the context of the subject matter is key. This allows me to tailor the subject matter and my teaching approach to meet them where they are and help accomplish their specific goals.
One highlight of my role as a Creative Director was developing interactive concepts around the Growth Mindset for a client’s national meeting audience. Being exposed to Carol Dweck’s work was transformative for me, and carrying forward her findings in the teaching process is a benefit to any student building new understanding.
