UmmeSalama Mustafa

I believe that anyone can learn anything, but everyone learns differently.

Umme is a graphic designer and calligrapher with an immense love for typography, people, and adventure. In Umme’s view, design is the product of creativity applied to a problem. Her goal with her student is to help them convey a message or a story through a very real, practical use of art.

Umme trained as a a visual designer and calligrapher in Sri Lanka and spent over a decade working in advertising. She has a deep passion for calligraphy, and has trained as a calligraphy teacher. Through pop-up workshops, online classes, and private tutoring, she has taught hundreds of students, both junior and senior alike.

Umme runs a hand-lettering and calligraphy community in Sri Lanka where she runs workshops and encourages the widespread adoption of modern calligraphy and hand-lettering in Sri Lanka.

Teaching philosophy

In UmmeSalama’s words

I believe that anyone can learn anything, but everyone learns differently. We all have different skill levels and individual talents, and with that, a unique perspective to offer.

My approach to teaching requires individual focus on each student. I learn about them before I teach them, and that allows me to bring out their strengths while working on their weaknesses. I feel that with this approach, the student stays more confident and interested in what they are learning.
