Francis Highton

Francis Highton is a geographer and educator who brings both academic depth and real-world perspective to his teaching. He has taught geography across a range of school settings in the UK, working with students of varying ages and abilities, and is known for creating classrooms that are intellectually engaging, structured, and responsive to each student’s needs. Francis approaches teaching as a collaborative process, encouraging students to ask questions, think critically about the world around them, and connect what they learn to real places and lived experiences. His work is grounded in the belief that geography is not just about maps, but about understanding people, systems, and the forces shaping our world.

Francis holds a bachelor’s degree in geography from Durham University, where he graduated in 2013. He continued his studies at Durham, earning a master’s degree in risk and security in collaboration with the international studies department. He later completed his postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) at the University of Reading, formally training as a classroom teacher.

His academic work reflects a sustained interest in human geography and the intersection of place, culture, and global systems. His undergraduate dissertation explored the long-term impacts of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on the city, while his master’s research focused on the London 2012 Olympics, examining questions of security, surveillance, and the lasting effects of global events on urban environments. This foundation informs the way Francis teaches, often bringing in case studies and real-world examples that help students see the relevance of geography in everyday life.

Before entering teaching, Francis pursued elite-level rowing, training with the goal of qualifying for the Olympic team. During this time, he also worked in leadership roles, including managing a cinema and later overseeing large-scale events for Moving Ahead. These experiences shaped his ability to lead, communicate clearly, and engage groups—skills that translate directly into his classroom practice.

Since 2019, Francis has been teaching geography at Hampton School in London, where he has taught across multiple year groups and contributed to a vibrant academic community. In addition to his teaching, he is a Level 2 certified rowing coach, runs the geography club, helps organize the Geographical Association’s Worldwise Quiz, and has led student trips to Tenerife, Iceland, and Uganda. Across all of his work, Francis aims to make learning dynamic, relevant, and deeply connected to the wider world.

Teaching Philosophy & Approach

I am an experienced teacher with years of expertise in Geography. I have tutored for the last two years around my teaching role and have helped several students to improve their grades by nurturing their understanding through tailored teaching. I love Geography, and I believe it is more important than ever to focus on the issues that it as a subject can highlight. I try to encourage this feeling in my students, as I believe that when you are actively engaged in a topic, it is much easier to enjoy the learning process.

I am passionate about helping students to succeed academically while simultaneously helping them to see the source material as fresh, interesting and relevant to their day-to-day life. I do this by creating a supportive and encouraging environment, ensuring every tutee feels motivated and capable of achieving their goals. I excel at breaking down the more complex concepts of Geography, particularly at GCSE and A-Level, into manageable parts. This allows students to learn at their own pace without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. I explain topics in a clear and accessible way, allowing students to grasp key concepts and so improve their academic performance. I am flexible in my approach, really dialling into what a student may be struggling with to pinpoint areas where extra guidance is needed. By doing this, and recognising the unique struggles of each student, I create a trusting environment where they feel confident in their own learning journey, and where each student feels comfortable to ask questions and make mistakes.

Learning, and therefore tutoring, is a process, and progress takes time. I believe in the growth mindset; challenges are opportunities to learn, rather than obstacles to avoid. By working collaboratively with my students and tutees, we take steps to improve each and every session to achieve their goals and aspirations.

“I believe in the growth mindset; challenges are opportunities to learn, rather than obstacles to avoid.”
