Originally from Australia, Stephen earned his BA in English and Master’s degree in education from Western Sydney University. A diehard traveler and adventurer with excellent Spanish language skills he immediately hit the road, eventually landing in Bogota, Colombia where he teaches high school English at an American international school.
Stephen believes that the most effective teaching is that tailored to the student, and that aims to connect the student with the material in the most effective way. This often leads Stephen toward a “tapestry of pedagogy” approach that believes project-based learning with other forms (kinetic, etc.). For example, when teaching Shakespeare Stephen usually employs the “Folger method,” which involves acting out the plays.
Stephen is dedicated to mentoring students through centered learning, personal connections, structured academic tasks, and continuous feedback, recognizing these elements as essential for student growth and development. Stephen’s greatest source of pride lies in witnessing his students develop a genuine love and passion for English Language Arts, empowered with the ability to apply their critical thinking skills to the world around them.
I am a life long learner constantly seeking refinement and improvement of the teaching craft embracing new technologies, tools and pedagogies. Teaching and inspiring, high school students English Literature, is my passion and purpose. I am a student centered teacher: hence I teach predominately through analytical reading, through writing workshops and utilizing power of guided classroom discussion. I enjoy bringing novels, poems, plays and short stories to life in the classroom whilst creating meaningful connections to the student. I ensure a strong positive learning environment founded on discipline, respect and cultural diversity. I encourage my students to take academic risks within the the safe space of the classroom.
