Zachary Roach

Zachary Roach grew up in a family of teachers. Not only his parents, but two of his three siblings are also teachers. One can imagine conversations at Roach dinners focused on the thorny issue of Hamlet’s thinking or Toni Morrison’s complex style.
Zachary has five years of teaching experience in urban high school settings—three years in Brooklyn, NY and two years in Camden, NJ, where he has taught 9th and 10th grade English and creative writing.

Zachary’s English courses focus on deepening students’ inquiry into rich texts through rigorous discourse and process-based writing. He teaches a wide range of fiction and nonfiction texts and tailors his courses to the interests of specific learners. He is particularly passionate about Shakespeare and American literature. Some of Zachary’s favorite authors are Jesmyn Ward, James Baldwin, David Foster Wallace, and Elizabeth Strout.

Zachary has also served as an instructional leader for English, history, and mathematics at Camden Prep High School, where he developed newer teachers’ pedagogical skills and helped veteran teachers refine their practice. He is currently in a fellowship for the role of Dean of Curriculum and Instruction.

Zachary holds a BA (honors) in English and American studies from Wesleyan University, along with a masters in teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education.

Teaching Philosophy & Approach

English class comes alive through learning partnerships between the teacher and student. These partnerships are most effective when they are grounded in trust, passion, and commitment. Cicero offers a unique opportunity for teachers and students to develop learning partnerships that are rigorous and creative. Through one-on-one discourse and inquiry-based writing, my students will develop a sense of independence and curiosity along with foundational argumentative and analytical writing skills that will prepare them for college English courses.
