AP English Literature and Composition

SUBJECT

Our online AP English Literature and Composition course equips learners with the tools to do advanced literary analysis and write at the college level. It is designed in accordance with the standards set forth by the College Board, administrators of the AP exam, and to prepare students to take that exam. This course is usually held over a full year (30 weeks) with two sessions per week; but can be condensed. For students who plan to take the exam in May, the final 4-5 weeks of the course is set aside for exam preparation. For students who don’t plan to take the exam, this course mirrors an advanced level high school English literature course. For all students—whether exam directed or doing the course without the exam—we tailor the curriculum to your interests and learning style, ensuring a focused and effective learning experience.

Exploring Literary Masterpieces

In this AP English Literature and Composition course, you will embark on a journey through English language literary masterpieces from various time periods and cultures. Together with your teacher, you will delve into the nuances of classic and contemporary literature, including novels, plays, poetry, and essays. Through in-depth discussions, close readings, and literary analysis, you will gain a profound understanding of literary techniques, themes, and cultural contexts. Our one-on-one format allows for personalized attention, ensuring that you grasp the subtleties of each work.

This course usually follows the pattern of units laid out by the College Board, including units on poetry, units on short stories, and units on novels.

Developing Critical Thinking and Writing Skills

A cornerstone of this course is the development of critical thinking and writing skills. You will learn to dissect texts, analyze literary elements, and interpret complex themes. Through essay writing, creative assignments, and textual annotations, you will refine your ability to articulate your ideas and insights effectively. College-Level Writing

Since AP courses are designed to prepare students for college, there will be a strong focus in this course on getting you set up to succeed as a writer. Your teacher will likely assign several essays and a paper through the course, and work with you on the full writing process, from ideation to final edits, helping you master a structured approach to writing.

Exam Preparation and Test-Taking Strategies

For students who choose to prepare for the AP English Literature and Composition exam, we integrate exam preparation throughout the course. You will become familiar with the exam format, question types, and timing, and receive guidance on effective test-taking strategies. We provide practice exams, essay prompts, and sample responses to bolster your confidence and readiness. In the final stretch of the course, we transition into intensive exam preparation mode, focusing on targeted review, time management, and honing your ability to craft well-structured essays that meet the AP exam’s expectations. For students who elect not to sit the exam, the course will continue without prep.
