Our AP Latin course offers a captivating exploration of the classical world through the study of Latin language and literature, meticulously designed to align with the AP standards set by the College Board. This course can be done as a stand alone course or with preparation to take the AP exam. Either way, it’s designed for students who have been studying Latin for a few years and are ready for college-level, advanced work. As always with Cicero, this course will be personalized to the student’s interests and learning style, ensuring a focused and effective learning experience.

Mastering Latin Language Proficiency

At the core of our AP Latin course lies the one-to-one learning experience, in which students get access to a master teacher with years of experience teaching Latin and can dive into a comprehensive study of Latin language proficiency. From grammatical structures and syntax to vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, we will delve into the intricacies of Latin grammar and syntax. Engaging exercises and interactive activities are designed to develop fluency and accuracy in reading and comprehending authentic Latin texts.

Vergil, Caesar and Other Masterworks of Latin

Together we will embark on a journey into some of the greatest works of ancient Latin, including works by both Vergil and Caesar, which form the core of the AP Latin exam. Through close readings and in-depth analysis, we will unravel the complexities of Latin poetry, prose, and rhetoric, gaining insights into the literary techniques employed by ancient writers and these fundamental texts.

Understanding the Cultural and Historical Context

A key component of this course is exploring and understanding the cultural and historical context surrounding ancient texts. By examining the political, social, and philosophical ideologies prevalent during the time of their creation, we will develop a nuanced understanding of the influence of ancient Roman society on its literary works. Because this course is held one-to-one, our discussions will dive deeply into the aspirations, values, and struggles of the ancient world.

Exam Preparation and Test-Taking Strategies

For students who plan to take the AP Latin exam, we will spend the last 3-4 weeks on exam preparation with the aim of familiarizing ourselves with the exam format, translation tasks, and effective time management strategies. Practice exams and translation exercises will fortify our exam readiness. In the weeks leading up to the exam, we will focus on targeted review sessions, offering comprehensive guidance on exam strategies and content review to maximize performance on the AP exam.
