Jemma Lewis
Jemma's journey as a teacher started as a surf instructor in South Africa! After some time in the waves she branched into teaching maths, biology and physics at a high school level. These subjects aligned with her university studies in marine biology and oceanography and gave her a deeper understanding of these subjects. Additionally, she is also a classically trained pianist and teaches piano and piano theory. In 2019 and 2021 Jemma became the private teacher of a family running a surf resort in Indonesia where she taught the ACE curriculum and thereafter the Cambridge IGCSE levels. For the IGCSE levels has experience covering extended math, physics, business, English language and environmental management. Jemma is currently back in South Africa (GMT+2) teaching high school maths and physics, as well as piano.
Teaching Philosophy & Approach:
Each student has different methods of learning and assimilating information. As a teacher I strive to adapt my teaching methods to accommodate for these differences in order to aid each student to have a greater understanding of the subject being taught. I also feel that creating relatability in a subject is very important. For example, using real life situations that students relate to, to explain complex concepts. Additionally, incorporating the student's passions into examples aids to their interest and concentration to the subject material. This can be more challenging when teaching subjects like Maths but can be incorporated when doing word problems for example. Lastly, patience. Each student learns at a different pace and as a teacher it is important to remember this.
