Rudi Monson

Rudi Monson is a teacher with over twenty years of experience spanning both traditional classrooms and home-based learning environments. She spent the first decade of her career teaching middle school math in Chicago Public Schools, where she developed deep expertise in standards-based instruction and curriculum design. In the years since, she has continued her work as a homeschooling parent and educator, designing and facilitating rich, experiential learning for her own children and broader learning communities. This dual perspective, grounded in both formal schooling and personalized, home-based education, shapes Rudi’s thoughtful, flexible approach to one-to-one teaching.

Rudi holds a national board certification in adolescent and young adolescent mathematics, a distinction earned by a small percentage of educators in the United States. She completed her undergraduate studies prior to entering the classroom and later pursued advanced certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, reflecting her commitment to both subject mastery and pedagogical excellence.

During her decade in Chicago Public Schools, Rudi taught 7th and 8th grade math and quickly emerged as a leader within her school community. As lead math teacher, she collaborated with universities and cultural institutions across Chicago, bringing innovative practices back to her school. She designed and facilitated professional development workshops, led instructional coaching cycles, and mentored fellow teachers; work that deepened her expertise in curriculum design, assessment, and differentiated instruction.

After stepping away from the classroom to raise her three children, Rudi’s work in education evolved in new and meaningful ways. She became deeply engaged in homeschooling, exploring a wide spectrum of approaches including worldschooling, gameschooling, and experiential education. She founded The Phoenix Collective, a learning cooperative in Kansas that brought together homeschooling and virtual schooling families for shared academic and social experiences. There, she designed programming that blended academic learning with community-building—organizing field studies, guest speakers, cultural events, and leadership opportunities for both students and parents.

Rudi has also worked as an early childhood educator in a play- and arts-based kindergarten and served as teacher in residence at a historic one-room schoolhouse museum, where she developed interdisciplinary curriculum exploring the purpose and history of education. Today, she continues this work as a boatschooling educator, living and learning with her family along the Pacific coast of Mexico. Through this experience, she designs curriculum that is immersive, place-based, and globally oriented; helping students connect academic concepts to the world around them in meaningful and lasting ways.

Teaching Philosophy & Approach

My teaching philosophy centers on the misty space between education and school. Education, the drawing out of each child's innate powers, could be considered a lofty goal. As much as possible though, I believe we must simply get out of the way of the brilliance of youth. The flexibility and creativity of the human mind is precious and our most important job is to treat it carefully. We must follow the kids, observe them, nurture their passions, build their skills, guide them as they seek paths of opportunities. I truly believe that each child has a power to share with the world. Our job is to help them sharpen it and use it for good.

As humans, we learn in so many different settings and environments and scenarios. Our role as teachers is to foster the right learning environment for each child. Sometimes, it's a comfortable, safe space where they are eager to take risks. Sometimes, it's a challenging space, where they learn to build a tolerance for uncertainty, failure, or frustration. Sometimes, it's helping them find their flow state, just between discomfort and ease, where time slips away and deep learning flows. There is a time and place for each style. A master teacher knows how to move flexibly with the learners.

“I truly believe that each child has a power to share with the world. Our job is to help them sharpen it and use it for good.”
