The best way to focus when writing an essay is to have a well-defined process, a checklist. This can vary from writer to writer, but some common steps are: brainstorming and free writing, organizing thoughts into topic areas and clusters, outlining, and drafting. A well-organized, robust essay writing course (like this one!) can really help a student build a process to make them more effective essay writers.

Actually, some middle schoolers and high schoolers have figured out ways to earn a little extra cash while also dialing in excellent essays for school. There are two primary ways to do this. One is to submit essays to competitions like the Free Press high school essay contest, which pays $2000. Another option is to write essays for publications, either your own on platforms like Substack where you can charge subscriptions to read your work, or for media outlets like Buzzfeed.
