Claire Dossett

Claire is a versatile & enthusiastic teacher of A-level Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as General Science to IGCSE level and Middle School STEM, with a 2:1 honours degree in Environmental Science. She has worked in both public and private schools in the UK and France.
She currently has responsibility for the pastoral care and delivery of the PSGS programme for Upper Middle School students, and throughout her teaching career has worked as a tutor with students throughout secondary school.

In her current school she has implemented and co-ordinated the whole school House system, and this has included planning and running House Days for the entire school community (ages 3 – 19 years old), in addition to the redesigning of the school’s International Week to make it more dynamic and to incorporate more of a House based and cohesive feel to the activities.

Additionally, she has co-ordinated a Science club and whole school activities for National Science Week, designed and implemented new schemes of work for all key stages, worked with student teachers and new staff in a mentoring role.

She has organized numerous trips to enhance academic learning and have organized, as well as supported, extra-curricular pastoral trips including those with overnight stays. Last year she designed and led a trip to the USA, and is in the process of organizing a multi-venue trip to Italy for this summer. She is also in the process of completing her training to become an accredited assessor for the Duke of Edinburgh International Award.

In addition to her teaching role, Claire has been an exam marker for AQA, an author for an online-textbook company, and privately tutored students in preparation for their GCSE’s.

Teaching Philosophy & Approach

My main aim as a teacher is to make the learning experience fun and relevant. I employ a range of different teaching techniques and styles depending on the group of students that I am working with. Being a science specialist, I try to always make the topics being covered relevant to real life applications and experiences the students may encounter; as well as using as many practical, experimental and hands-on activities as possible.

I encourage students to be responsible for their own learning and progress and will use self and peer assessment regularly in lessons, as well as involving students in paired and group learning activities.

When working with students in exam classes, I regularly utilize a variety of revision strategies and review work covered through frequent low stakes assessment activities to introduce and encourage students to find revision techniques that work well for them from an early point. Having a number of years of exam marking experience allows me to guide students successfully when looking at how best to answer exam questions to enable the marking points to be met.

My open and encouraging approach with students of all ages and abilities has led me to develop good and trusting relationships with the students I work with so that they feel comfortable to participate in lessons without fear of getting answers wrong.
