As an award-winning teacher, Maeve Siu has demonstrated her exceptional talents in making mathematics fun and relevant through the use of music, dance, and technology.
Maeve’s innovative methods have earned her recognition and accolades for her outstanding contributions to education. Putting theory into practice, Maeve’s teaching approach goes beyond conventional methods, ensuring that her students not only grasp mathematical concepts but also develop a genuine passion for the subject.
After 15 years in the classroom, mostly in the School District of Philadelphia, Maeve decided to spread math love to the world by making her original math songs and parodies available to the public. Links to her songs and videos can be found on her website mathlovesiu.com
Maeve has her BA in Mathematics Summa Cum Laude from Bryn Mawr College ‘08 and her M.Ed. In Curriculum and Classroom Management from Gratz College ‘13. She is the recipient of the ETS Award for Excellence for having scored in the top 15% of all prior test takers as well as the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching for her work in Philadelphia’s public schools.
I believe that all students can learn and have access to mathematics at any level, it is a matter of finding their lens to unlock the content. I infuse my lessons with joy, harnessing the power of music and rhyme. We approach our study of math using numeric, pictorial and analytic lenses, consistently weaving the three together to create deep and lasting understanding. Getting the right answer is great, but problem solving and knowing what questions to ask is more profound. Students learn best when they feel safe to be themselves and to be imperfect. Growth is key; we learn by thinking, questioning, then repeating that process, by getting things wrong and then less wrong. I truly love helping young people grow as mathematical thinkers.
